What it is
The rotating wheel that gives the liquid its energy. Its diameter and vane shape set the flow and head of the pump.
How it works
Liquid enters at the centre (eye); the curved vanes throw it outward at speed, which the casing or diffuser converts into pressure.

Signs it needs replacing
- Flow and pressure lower than the curve
- Eroded or pitted vanes (cavitation, abrasives)
- Vibration or rubbing noise
- Higher motor current for the same duty
Selection & fitting tips
- Impeller trim (diameter) is part of the model code, so quote it with the nameplate data
- Stainless steel for clean/corrosive water; cast iron for general duty
- Balance after any repair
- Replace the sleeve and seal when changing the impeller
